What are the requirements for vehicles carrying hazardous goods

Posted on April 23, 2018 by NorthernMedia

All vehicles that are transporting hazardous goods must comply with certain regulations regarding health and safety and fire safety. It is important that all transport vehicles follow the regulations to ensure the journey is safe for everybody involved.

The European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) sets out a number of regulations and requirements regarding various different aspects including driver training, equipment and documentation.

Here are some of the key requirements for vehicles that are carrying hazardous goods:

With regard to the CDG regs of the vehicles, British vehicles on a national journey must use ‘emergency action codes’ rather than Hazard Identification numbers. For tank carriages, there is also a requirement to display the telephone number.

One aspect of the equipment regulations includes placarding and marking. The placards necessary will depend on the different and unique situations or loads, although the vehicle and packages must be labelled accordingly.

Vehicles carrying hazardous goods also must follow regulations with regard to the fire extinguishers they have onboard. Fire extinguishers are one of the most important means of equipment which vehicles are required to follow. Fire extinguishers provide the initial response to a fire hazard if one does occur and is vital in limiting the damage of any fires.

Firstly, there is a minimum number of fire extinguishers required for vehicles of different weights. Secondly, regulations regarding fire extinguishers also relate to the type of hazard that is being transported. Below are the fire extinguishers regulations and requirements for different vehicles:

Up to 3.5 tonne –                               2kg for cab plus 2 kg
Over 3.5 t and up to 7.5 tonne          2kg for cab. Total 8 kg (usually one 6 kg)
Over 7.5 tonne                                  2kg for cab. Total 12 kg (including one 6kg)
Small load vehicles                           One 2 kg only
